Wesley A. Mathwig, age 71, Burnsville, passed away on Wednesday, Dec. 23, 2020.
Wesley was born to Walter and Eileen Mathwig in Green Isle on Nov. 27, 1949. He attended high school in Arlington-Green Isle and then entered the U.S. Marines and serviced his country proudly in Vietnam. Wes worked as a mason/brick layer and after he retired he enjoyed helping friends and family with home improvement projects. He loved fishing, traveling, history, “free meals,” and spending time with his family, especially going to his grandchildren’s sporting events. He was a “fan favorite” among friends and family. Everyone looked forward to what stories he would tell. He thought that if “everyone ate ice cream the world would be a happier place.”
He is survived by his daughters, Heather (Kevin) Hover and Briana (Doug) Kloppen; grandchildren, Paige, Carly, Chase and Zach; mother, Eileen Mathwig; siblings, Joyce (David) Kroells, Wayne Mathwig, Jackie (Darrel) Alsleben, Donald (Patty) Mathwig, Marvin Mathwig, Bill (Carla) Mathwig, and Bev Breyer; sister-in-law, Nancy Mathwig; also by other loving relatives and friends.
He is preceded in death by his father, Walter Mathwig; brother, Darwin Mathwig; sister-in-law, Mary Mathwig; and nephew, Sean Mathwig.
A private service for Wesley was held with burial at Fort Snelling National Cemetery.
A celebration of his life will take place early spring 2021. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to Disabled American Veterans.
