Melvin Pomplun, 84, Arlington

Melvin Pomplun, age 84, of Arlington, passed away at the Ridgeview Medical Center, Waconia, on Monday, Aug. 19.
Memorial services will be held at the United Church of Christ in Gaylord at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 14.
A Gathering of Family and Friends will be held at the church from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. prior to the service.
Melvin Edward Pomplun was born at his home in Arlington Township on April 11, 1935. He was the son of Edward and Clara (Oldenburg) Pomplun. Clara passed away while he was an infant. Edward married Ella (Oldenburg) Pomplun and she loved him as her own. He was baptized and confirmed in his faith at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Gaylord. He attended District 73 Country School and was a 1953 graduate of the Gaylord High School.
On May 25, 1957, Melvin was united in marriage to Patricia Joan Hoffman at the Norwegian Lutheran Church in Minneapolis. This marriage was blessed with three children, Anita, Jeff and Patrick. Melvin and Patricia resided in Minneapolis for a short while before settling into their farm in rural Arlington. Melvin and Patricia shared 62 years of marriage.
On June 7, 1957, he enlisted in the Army Reserve and attended Basic Training at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri, and after graduation he was assigned to the Winthrop reserve unit and was Honorably Discharged on Feb. 13, 1963.
Melvin was a house painter and spent his early years working for numerous employers and later started his own painting business.
He cherished the time spent with his family and friends. He also enjoyed old tractors and going to flea markets auctions.
Melvin is survived by his wife, Patricia Pomplun of Arlington; children, Anita (David) Swanson, of Glencoe,  the late Jeff (Sandra) Pomplun of Gaylord, and Patrick (Patricia) Pomplun of Evansville; grandchildren, William, Anthony and Ethan Pomplun, Justin (Christina) Essig, Joshua (Ashley) Essig, and Kelly Essig; four great-grandchildren; sisters, Doris Petzel, Marjorie Wagner, Linda (Gary) Hahn, and LouAnn (Rodney) Lind; brothers, Roger (Geraldine) Pomplun, Earl (Betty) Pomplun, Richard (Sharon) Pomplun, Donald Pomplun and Steven Pomplun; sisters-in-law, Shirley Hahn and Joyce Boerner; nieces; nephews; and other relatives.
Melvin was proceeded in death by his parents, Edward, Clara and Ella Pomplun; son, Jeff Pomplun; great-grandson, Jett Essig; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Fred and Alma Hoffman; brothers-in-law, Earl Petzel, David Wagner, Glen Klappenbach, Reginald Hoffman and Terrence Hoffman, Wilmer Lueck and Melrose Hahn; sisters-in-law, LuAnn Pomplun, Della Klappenbach, Beverly Hoffman, Connie Lueck and Rosie Hoffman.
